EVANGELIO

No iniciativa personal.

Puccini, the Italian composer, in 1922 worked on the opera Turandot and he was diagnosed with cancer. One day he decided to gather his students around him and asked them to finish the opera if he died before his completion. A short time later he passed away.

Puccini's memory inspired his disciples greatly and they completed the opera a number of years later.

In 1926 the opera was performed in Milan. During the performance, when they reached the point where illness had prevented Puccini from proceeding any further, Toscanini, with tears in his eyes, turned to the audience and said: Thus far the Master wrote, but he died. After a moment of silence he said with great pride “But his disciples finished his work”.

As followers of Jesus Christ we have been entrusted with a similar work, to complete our Master's work.

Today's Gospel is not about the twelve apostles, it is about us.

The twelve apotles were a bizarre group. Nothing qualified them from an intsellectual or religious point of view. The only thing they had in common was their trust in Jesus who had called them.

Jesus began God's work preaching the kingdom of God. He was the great preacher sent by God, but his symphony is an unfinished one. Jesus wants that we, his disciples, complete the work he began many years ago.

The Church is mission. The sending has never stopped, that is why today's gospel is about all of us. The Good News is not a message to be kept in a locked box.

The mission is both spiritual and physical and it is not restricted to missionaries, to priests and sisters, it is your work and my work.

The church may be tax exempt, but none of us is exempted from being a witness of God's love.

Today those twelve apostles are remembered because of you and me, because we are called to be not only apostles in name but also in fact. We are the apostles of the twenty first century.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta, this tiny Albanian sister, was neither a priest nor a preacher, nontheless she was a great apostle, a fantastic messenger of the Gospel of simplicity and life. She fulfilled today's gospel to the letter.

In Puccini's opera there is a beautiful song called Nessun Dorma, None shall sleep.

Let us not sleep when we have an opportunity to build up the kingdom of God.

If today you leave the church smiling and singing you will be preaching the goodness of the Lord.
